Lavender is a study on grief and it's impact on those left behind. The bereaved person's world has changed so that nothing appears to to be as good as it was and they fixate on something that they hope will offer them comfort from their pain, in this case the smell of lavender. After experimenting with various instruments the band used a combination of keyboard, guitar and guitar with sonic effects to suggest funereal choirs and tolling bells, reinforcing the theme of the song.
