about

A fanciful, widespread view during the middle ages was that barnacle geese came from the goose barnacle. The two are strikingly similar in colour and appearance. In this piece the movement from one to the other (and back) is played out. The barnacle goose gathers in huge numbers on the Solway, Cumbria. The piece is as much an examination of the power of transformation in the human imagination, rather than the reality. Something more akin to a cave painting than a scientific account. The piece starts with the 'Goose Theme' - a violent start dominated by cymbals and dissonance, mirroring the start to life of the barnacle goose (in reality - as well as myth). Then the scene shifts in 'Inimical' with field recordings of rooks and other corvids, over which there is some spoken word and a portrayal of threat. We stay on the Solway for the third part 'Plewit', which moves into 'Where Geese Go', which kickstarts the 'flight' section of the piece. 'Ghost Goose' reprises the theme, whilst building up banks of feedback which shift and change through the arpeggios of 'Red Beacons' then 'fsa1' and 'fas2', in which keys complete the journey and transformation.
